Each year during winter over 1500 humpback whales migrate from Antarctic waters through South Island New Zealand to the warm waters of Hervey Bay. Humpback whales migrate up to 25,000 km a year, grow up to 16 metres in length and weigh up to 45,000 kilograms. They eat up to 1 to 8 tones of fish and krill a day during the winter and store this food in the form of fat to nourish them during the summer months. They are truly incredible animals. |
