  • 45 minute flight from Brisbane
  • 90 minute flight from Sydney
  • 3.5 hour drive from Brisbane
  • 3.5 hour train from Brisbane to Maryborough with a connecting bus to Hervey Bay

By Air

Two major airlines service Hervey Bay Fraser Coast Airport with direct flights from Sydney and Brisbane.

If you're starting point is Sydney Virgin Australia has a direct flight from every day of the week. Fares vary but Virgin Australia is very reliable and their daily flight arrives in Hervey Bay during the morning. Check the Virgin website for times as times from Sydney and arrival times in Hervey Bay vary depending on the time of year.

If you're starting point is Brisbane then Qantas also has you covered every day of the week and with a number of flights every day. If you're travelling for business and plan your trip into Hervey Bay in the morning, conduct the business and then enjoy a night at Ramada Hervey Bay Resort and dinner at Smokey Joe's cafe Bar & Grill.

By Car

Travelling by car to Hervey Bay is quite simple. Hervey Bay is approximately 3.5 hours drive North of Brisbane. Depart Brisbane on the Bruce Highway and stay on that highway until you reach Maryborough.

From Maryborough it's simply a matter of following the signs and allowing 30 to 40 minutes for the trip from Maryborough to Hervey Bay.

Travelling to Hervey Bay from the North of the state is just as simple. All you have to do is follow the Bruce Highway South until you see signs directing you to Hervey Bay.

The first signs will take you through the small town of Howard and from then on the route you need to take is clearly sign-posted.

By Bus

You can travel to Hervey Bay from Brisbane or from the North of the state by road coach. Greyhound and Premier have a number of coaches running through Hervey Bay at various times every day (Brisbane to Cairns and vice versa).

However, not all of the coach services are direct on their trips North and South. So, unless you want to take the scenic route to Hervey Bay be sure to check on which buses operate on the direct route.

By Train

Queensland Rail operate daily services into Hervey Bay from Brisbane and from the North of the state. They do that despite the fact that the railway line into Hervey Bay was closed around 14 years ago.

To achieve the seemingly impossible, Queensland Rail have an air-conditioned coach that meets both North and Southbound trains at Maryborough and conveys passengers to Hervey Bay. The train service is quite popular and bookings are essential.

Public Transport in Hervey Bay

Once you're here in Hervey Bay travelling around the city is also quite simple. There are regular bus services with Wide Bay Transit connecting most parts of the city and catering for tourists along the beach front. There is a small fleet of taxis and an inexpensive limousine service too.

Both the RSL and Boat Club have a small fleet of courtesy buses to pick you up from your accommodation if you want to visit one of the clubs and they'll also take you home again.

All major and several of the smaller car rental companies have offices here but rental cars are always in demand so it's advisable to book well in advance of your visit.

Bike hire is also available on a daily basis right here at the Ramada Hervey Bay Resort and they are a great way to get around and see the sights.

If you fly into Hervey Bay and don't wish to hire a car there is an airport shuttle bus that will bring you in from the airport and drop you at your accommodation. On your return journey it will also pick you up from your accommodation and take you out to the airport.
